Iceland Waterfall Guide
Ægissíðufoss
Hella, Iceland
Southern Coast
It’s not a very large waterfall, but it’s beautiful nonetheless and on a sunny day it is a great easy hike (walk) to the waterfall along the Ytri-Rangá river.
Seljalandsfoss
Þórsmerkurvegur, 861, Iceland
Southern Coast
Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s most popular waterfalls with water dropping 60 meters and the ability to walk behind the falls. Because of the mist that radiates from the falls, one should wear shoes with traction so as not to slip on the path, and a rain jacket (and rain pants). It is right off of Route 1 and there is ample parking as it is such a popular attraction.
Gljúfrabúi
Þórsmerkurvegur, 861, Iceland
Southern Coast
Gljúfrabúi can be easily overlooked when everyone is focusing on Seljalandsfoss, but it’s right next door so you should add it to your itinerary! There is a small stream that you will have to step in to get to the waterfall, and the waterfall is mostly obscured by a rock face that you’ll pass through. There is a small boulder that you can stand on that makes for an epic photo opportunity.
Skógafoss
Skógar, Iceland
Southern Coast
Skógafoss is another popular waterfall along the South Coast and is also the start (or end) of the famous Fimmvörðuháls Trail. Climb the stairs to the top of the waterfall and you’ll be on the trail. It’s a beautiful trail that you should walk a short ways on, if not completing the entire trail. Skógafoss is also home to a popular campsite, and in the evening the field in front of the falls will be filled with tents and camper vans.
Svartifoss
Skatafell, Iceland
Southern Coast
Located in the Vatnajökull National Park, Svartifoss flows in front of the geological phenomenon of basalt columns. There are a few trails to get there, but this 2.8 mile loop will add a few more waterfalls into the mix.
Gullfoss
Golden Circle
Gulfoss is a two-step waterfall and is part of the popular Golden Circle tour. It falls 11 meters and then 21 meters into the Gullfossgjúfur canyon. Unlike some of the other major waterfalls in Iceland, Gulfoss is viewed from above and not below.
Dynjandi
Arnarfjörður, Iceland
Westfjords
Dynjandi is theee waterfall system to see in the Westfjords. It emulates a bridal veil that cascades down multiple water falls (7 of them). There are paths up to the falls and each of the smaller falls has a viewing platform. Like Skógafoss, this waterfall has a campsite next to it!
