Nestled under the Ten Mile Range, Breckenridge is a skiers paradise in the winter, and launchpad for summer activities.

The town was founded in November 1859 and named after the mining prospector Thomas Breckenidge. At one point, the town was spelled Breckinridge (after a US Vice President), because the town hoped to gain a post office that way. It worked, but the spelling was later changed back to Breckenridge. Breckenridge and Summit County used to be part of Utah’s territory during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, and the town was developed for the miners working along the Blue River.

Today, this Colorado town bursts at the seams with almost 40,000 people on the busiest of days (mind you the local population is 4,500 residents) who come to experience a true mountain town.
