Leaf Peeping the Most Photographed Mountains In Colorado: Maroon Bells

Maroon Bells are the most photographed peaks in Colorado, and some of the top in the country. And it’s for good reason- the two bell shaped peaks rise tall above Maroon Lake giving off a dramatic and jaw-dropping scene (they’re 14’ers). There are limited parking passes available, but one can also reach the Maroon Bells Trailhead area by shuttle, bicycle, or e-bike. Making reservations in advance is necessary because of its popularity. I was incredibly lucky and got a parking pass a few days before I went, as someone posted in a Colorado Hiking group on Facebook that they could no longer use their parking reservation.

There are various hiking trails in the area with various levels of difficulty- so there is something for everyone.

Maroon Bells Scenic Loop Trail

This trail is an easy trail that goes along the right side of the lake. It’s a dirt path that does have some rocks. There is a creek that flows into the lake, and this trail will bring you there.

Crater Lake Trail

The Crater Lake Trail goes past the Maroon Bells Scenic Loop Trail and is around 3.5 miles round-trip and is a moderate level hike due to it being a rocky trail with some incline. Sneakers or hiking boots are definitely recommended. The incline levels out at a rocky section where you’ll soon be at Crater Lake. If you’re into back country camping, there are designated camp sites near the lake.

Some of the longer hikes (and that I did not do) include the East Maroon Trail, West Maroon Pass, Buckskin Pass, Willow Lake Trail, Maroon Peak Trail, and Four Pass Loop. I hope to come back next summer and do some backpacking here!
